Here's my fastest time after a couple hours playing today. I just got the game last night and made my first laps today.
Played on this:

Your FOV is wayyyyyyy off, other than that nice job.

This is just the default. I haven't messed with many settings outside of wheel configuration and honestly I probably don't even know half of what there is to adjust. What do you suggest?

I would suggest you read this article I wrote ;)

I put my 42" TV right in front of my sim rig. It probably makes out to be 4' from my eyes so what do you think I should set my FOV to?

Proper FOV for you would be about 16. In order to get a higher FOV you need to get closer to your screen. In order to change the FOV to a value that low, which you cannot do in rFactor default setup, you need to modify a file in your rfactor folder...
rFactor\GameData\Vehicles\Modname\Carname\Carname_Cams.cam
replace modname by your F1 2006 folder and name of the car, openning the file "F1whatever_cams.cam" with the notepad.
You will find this code:
LocalCam=COCKPIT { Fov=(60.000000, 60.00000) Clear=TRUE Color=(16 4, 218, 249) ClipPlanes=(0.075000, 700.000000) LODMultiplier=(1.000000) Size=(1.000000, 1.000000) Center=(0.500000, 0.500000) MipmapLODBias=(0.000000) Flags1=(0) Flags2=(0) RadiusLimits=(0.000000, 0.000000) OrientationRate=(999.000000, 999.000000, 999.000000) PositionOffset=(0, -0.1, 0) OrientationOffset=(-0.070000, 0.000000, 0.000000) Radius=(0.000000)

Nice. I used to play CTDP 2006 mod. You should also check out gp4 with 2013 mod, its fantastic, probably the most real to life physics I've ever seen (judging by the way the cars act in game compared to tv and live).

Replace Fov=60.0000000, 60.000000 by 16.000000 for both numbers...
Then save the file and get back in the game, setting up your FOV in game to "default" setting... You will then have your proper FOV.

Thanks for bringing that up! I changed it to the minimum 35 and it's sooooooooooooooo much better!

Whats the spreadsheet good for?

Change it 16. 35 is still WAY off for what you have and use... If you want to keep using 35, you can, but you need to be quite a bit closer to your screen for that... Maybe 1 foot away or so.
Here is a video with the difference clearly shown...

Match you screen size to the size indicated on the tabs at the bottom, click on that tab, then using the distance your eyes sit from the screen you find the FOV you should have set for your system.
However, use it as a guideline because if you use a single monitor, you may not be able to see enough into corners. I should be running 30-degrees FOV for my setup, but I run with 45-degrees so I can see into corners and on the sides a little bit. Don't go overboard, use just enough so you feel comfortable with the surroundings.

What's the formula to figure it out? I'm curious

Oh gotcha I didn't see the tabs before. It goes up to 32 but I have a 42" TV :(

Under cockpit fov for the Renault I changed 75.0000, 75.0000 to 16.0000, 16,0000 but I don't think it worked

I'll do some number crunching for you. How far from the screen do your eyeballs sit?

Set it back to default in game or it will not show.

Ah that did the trick. I had such lack of peripheral vision I couldn't get around corners without crashing...I can't drive like that without a triple monitor. Maybe in a few months...

I don't have a tape measure but call it 4'

Yeah, you're looking at a 24-degree FOV for your setup.
Right now the code is in MATLAB, when I get it put in Excel I'll post it up for everyone.

YEs, because your monitor is too far... Bring it closer to you and you will be able to drive with a higher FOV

I've been thinking about building a stand onto the rig to bring it closer. I guess it's even more likely to happen now. And I really need that triple monitor!

I have a triple monitor setup, it's very nice... three 22 inches monitor, roughly 2 feet from my eyes. But really, manage to be with a proper FOV. Simracing can be rendered totally useless if not setup properly. Also, I would recommend you try the Corvette mod (3.1 or 3.2), which is among the best. The Ferrari 288 GTO and the E46 M3 are awesome too... The F1 and other crazy fast high downforce cars like that will not teach you anything in term of driving. Racing lines maybe, but driving no.
Also, always setup your wheel in the logitech tool and in the game to 900 degrees. Forcefeedback with the realfeel plugin are very useful too for rFactor.
Of course, disableling all the helps are completly necessary.
